108|Contemporary presents the work of Kalliopi Monoyios in a solo exhibition on view April 2 – May 22, 2027. This exhibition focuses on the surprising and quirky uses of plastic with the goal of inviting people to think deeper about their own relationships with plastic. Exhibition Opening: Friday, April 2 – May 22, 2027 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm Kalliopi Monoyios is a Colorado-based artist working to mature the conversation around plastic and American consumerism. She uses art to bring people back to a state of childlike inquiry, where we can see our collective behavior and societal decisions with new eyes. Monoyios holds a degree in geology from Princeton University and built her early career as a science illustrator for the prominent paleontologist Neil Shubin at The University of Chicago. There she cemented her conviction that science communicators operating in all spheres are a critical part of creating a scientifically literate public. Her illustrations have appeared inside and on the covers of peer-review journals such as Nature and Science as well as The New York Times best-selling book Your Inner Fish by Neil Shubin. From 2011-2016, she co-founded and wrote Symbiartic, a blog covering the intersection of art and science for Scientific American. She served as president of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, an international group of visual science communicators, from. 2020-2022, with board service from 2019-2024. She exhibits her artwork throughout North America in pursuit of bringing deeper thought and awareness to the implications of American consumerism.
