Introduction to Handmade Books

Introduction to Handmade Books Weekend Workshop: Saturday October, 3rd & Sunday, October 4th, 10:30AM—2:00PM. This two-day workshop will introduce you to the basics of handmade books, including the appropriate terminology, materials, and tools needed. Book structures taught will include single sheet folded books, simple sewn pamphlet journals, sewn buttonhole books, and cloth wrapped hardcover accordion fold book structures. Students will be provided with a detailed list of bookmaking resources and other handouts that will consider some basic concepts for designing book content and for the book structures taught in class. By the end of this course, you will have a strong foundation in the basics of bookmaking, which will form a solid base for furthering your bookbinding skills.This class is perfect for the student who is a beginner and for those who want to brush-up on previously learned bookmaking skills. Join now > Bio: Anne Barnes was born in Columbus, OH, but spent her formative years growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, and is an artist, arts educator, and graphic designer living and working in Washington, DC. She holds a BA in Cultural Anthropology from George Washington University; an MA in Publications Design from the University of Baltimore; and an MFA in Visual Arts from Lesley University, College of Art and Design in Cambridge, MA. She has worked in book publishing, as a freelance graphic designer, as a Bookmaking Associate at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, is a teaching artist, volunteers for multiple arts organizations, and pursues her personal art practice in the studio.
