Julie Wills: Text as Sculpture

One Day Workshop: Saturday, October 10th, 11:00AM-3:00PM In this hands-on workshop, participants will work with language as a physical and visual material. We’ll begin with a series of experimental writing prompts to generate text, then consider how that language might take shape in space. Using simple materials and the museum environment as a site, each participant will create a temporary text-based artwork located within or around the building. By the end of the session, you’ll have a completed work to document and reflect on. Participants from all fields and experience levels are welcome—writers, visual artists, and others interested in exploring new ways of working with words and form. The workshop is designed to offer practical approaches that can be adapted to your own creative practice. Join now > Bio: Julie Wills’s sculptural assemblages, made from cast-off materials from the building trades, reference architecture, landscape, and the night sky to explore what is visible and what is hidden, what we build, and what we dismantle. She layers materials such as drywall, rigid foam insulation, and roofing tar in compositions that seem to peel back the skin of a building, exposing its infrastructure— a metaphor for the often invisible social and psychological frameworks that shape our lives. Wills’s works have been shown in museums and galleries across the U.S., including recent solo exhibitions at Plain Sight in Washington, DC (commissioned by the Embassy of Sweden and the European Union National Institutes for Culture), Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Gettysburg College, and MoCA Arlington. Wills earned her MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and MA in Art Criticism from the University of Montana. She lives and works in Baltimore, and is an Associate Professor of Art at Washington College.
