LI AIA CRAN Symposium 2026-Contrasts: Traditions and Innovations in Long IslandResidential Architecture7LU/4HSW

Long Island's built environment mirrors America’s own growth and architectural history. From 17th-century Colonial homes and eclectic 19th-century revivals to Gilded Age Beaux-Arts mansions, our residential architecture has always balanced historic forms with hidden structural innovations and formal exploration. As modernism accelerated into the 20th century, abstract designs, non-traditional materials, and inventive housing developments and production emerged. Today, the contrasts between historic traditionalism and modern abstraction continue as sustainable design, digital technologies, and AI reshape how we build. This symposium investigates these historic clashes, brilliant conjunctions, and the enduring genius that define Long Island’s remarkable residential architecture, yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
