From Alaska Botanical Garden

Join author Debbie Clarke Moderow for a reflective writing experience rooted in the changing boreal forest and the stories that rise from our relationships with the natural world. As the second installment of our writing series, this workshop invites participants to continue exploring the living relationship between place, attention, and voice through the lens of a warming boreal north. Debbie will describe the inspiration and process behind her recent art-science-humanities collaboration about the boreal forest, Threshold 32°F. (https://www.terrain.org/2025/poetry/threshold-32f/) Together, participants will meander along the Alaska Botanical Garden trails, considering muses from the natural world who inform each writer's authentic story. The walk will be followed by discussion and writing exercises designed to inspire. Finally, participants will consider the creative synergy of collaboration and how individual stories can be exchanged, expanded, and transformed through multi-genre exploration of our boreal forest home. There is a $2 cancellation fee for all cancellations; no refunds given with less than 48 hours notice. Debbie Clarke Moderow, Bio Debbie writes creative nonfiction and poetry, exploring her lifelong relationships with the landscape, creatures, and characters of her Alaskan home. Her memoir Fast Into the Night: A Woman, Her Dogs, and Their Journey North on the Iditarod Trail (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2016, Red Hen Press 2018) received the 2016 National Outdoor Book Award and the 2017 Willa Award for Creative Nonfiction. Since 2015, Debbie has collaborated with artists, scientists, and writers creating multi-genre projects about change in the far north. Her recent work, Threshold 32°F (by poet Debbie Clarke Moderow, painter Klara Maisch, and ecologist Rebecca Hewitt) is currently on tour in the lower 48. Website: debbieclarkemoderow.com
