About this event
One of 18 upcoming events at Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.
Calling all birders! Join the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 19, 2026! The Audubon Christmas Bird Count began in 1900, making it one of the longest-running community science projects in the world. This annual bird census brings together bird lovers across North America to help monitor bird populations and contribute to important conservation research. Grab your binoculars, bundle up, and join fellow bird enthusiasts for a day of birdwatching and community science in beautiful Portage Valley! Birders of all experience levels are welcome, from curious beginners to seasoned experts. On count day, teams of volunteers will venture into designated areas around Turnagain Arm to identify and count as many birds and species as possible during daylight hours. The data collected will be submitted to the National Audubon Society, contributing to more than a century of research used to assess bird populations, track long-term trends, and guide conservation efforts across North America. While the science is incredibly important, the Christmas Bird Count is about so much more! It’s an opportunity to connect with fellow nature lovers, explore Alaska’s breathtaking winter landscape, and experience the excitement of spotting some of our incredible feathered residents. Registration is required to participate. Please check back soon for registration details and event updates. We’re still getting all our ducks in a row! The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a program of the National Audubon Society, a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center coordinates the local Portage Christmas Bird Count and submits data to the national effort.
