Homeschool Enrichment Series: What Is…Beauty? (Ages 13-18)

What is…Beauty? is a four-week exploration of beauty as an encounter, an experience, and a persistent philosophical problem. Through explorations with art, nature, philosophy, and phenomenology, students will examine the different ways human beings have attempted to understand why some things strike as beautiful. Rather than working toward a single definition of beauty, students will consider competing possibilities: beauty as harmony and proportion, beauty as something rooted in nature, and beauty as an experience that resists explanation altogether. Discussion, observation, creative work, and philosophical inquiry will provide opportunities to test these ideas and to consider the deceptively difficult question at the center of the course: What is beauty?
