Learn about the history and art of spinning yarn by hand in this one-day workshop. Students will learn the basic techniques using a bottom whorl drop spindle. This simple but effective tool predates the spinning wheel and has been found in many archeological finds across the world. We will discuss other spindle types including top whorl and Turkish style spindles. By the end of class, students will have discussed the vast array of fibers that can be spun, learned how to draft wool for different yarn thicknesses, how to add twist for strength and loft, and ingenious ways to ply without equipment. Students will head home with a spindle and fiber, some brand-new yarn, and foundational skills to continue spinning by hand or to take to a future class on wheel spinning. Additional information: Advanced registration required. Physical ability: Spinning requires some hand strength and dexterity. This class is open to all experience levels. Suitable for ages 14+. A discounted youth price is available at checkout. A $25 materials fee is due in class to the instructor. Students receive a spindle to take home.
