About this event

Arts & Culture

Join artist Tia Keobounpheng for a film screening of her latest project, GIEĐAIN, followed by an artist talk. In 2025, Tia returned to her ancestral village in Swedish Sápmi with her two sons. They lived with their elder and relative for two weeks, learning from his seventy years of experience carving and crafting Sámi guksi and niibi. Their hands worked together to craft their own wooden cups and knives. GIEĐAIN speaks to the intrinsic knowing that was awakened in the process. Made possible through a 2025 Folk Arts and Cultural Traditions grant from the American Scandinavian Foundation. About the Artist: Tia Keobounpheng is an interdisciplinary visual artist from Minnesota whose practice weaves together geometry, abstraction, color, and fiber. Receiving numerous grants from the MN State Arts Board, MRAC, and the American Scandinavian Foundation, Tia will complete her first US residency at MacDowell in summer 2026. Her work has been exhibited in group shows Nordic Echoes at Scandinavia House in Manhattan, Common Threads at Apple Park in Cupertino, CA, and solo exhibitions Revealing Threads at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in 2023, and Muitit/To Remember at The Armory Show 2025. Her 2026 solo exhibition is currently on view at Weinstein Hammons Gallery in South Minneapolis. Nordic Echoes: Tradition in Contemporary Art will be on view at ASI from February 14-June 7, 2026. Advanced registration required.
