This course runs Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17, 2026, 10 am-5 pm both days. This course will teach beginners how to weave their first stake and strand willow basket. This very old basket style starts with a flat base, and builds the sides upwards with vertical “stakes” and horizontal “strands.” Locally grown willow of different sizes, colors, and textures will allow students to create their own completely unique pattern for a small round basket (about 9” wide and 8” tall). While weaving their first basket, students will also learn about harvesting, material selection, willow soaking, basket anatomy, and the benefits of different weaving patterns. Additional information: Advanced registration required. Ages: Suitable for ages 11-15 registered alongside an adult, or 16+. A discounted youth price is available at checkout. Skill level: This class is open to all skill levels, but is especially geared towards beginners. Physical ability: Basketry requires good hand strength and dexterity, such as being able to open a pickle jar. A $45 materials fee is due to the instructor in class and covers all materials and tools.
