About this event

Workshops

Learn the basics of rya weaving while making a small tapestry of your own design. Rya is a weaving technique that mimics the texture of a wool pelt, intended to keep Vikings warm while at sea. Today, artists like Emelie Röndahl and Christine Novotny use rya to explore color and form through weaving. Students will visit ASI’s current exhibitions, Handwoven: Between Chaos and Order and Nordic Echoes: Tradition in Contemporary Art to view contemporary weaving examples, then return to the classroom to try out weaving rya themselves in this beginner-friendly, hands-on class with fiber artist Riley Kleve. Students will learn history, technique, and get to explore oodles of colors and textures in class and leave with a finished project. Additional Information Advanced registration required. Skill level: This workshop is open to all skill levels but is geared towards beginner weavers. Ages: This workshop welcomes students 11-17 accompanied by a registered adult. A discounted youth price is available at checkout. Materials: A $15 materials fee will be due in class to instructor Riley Kleve and covers all necessary materials and use of the loom. This project incorporates lots of scrap yarns, so students are welcome to bring anything from their stash (approximately 8 inches or longer) that they would like to use in their project if they desire.
