Halloween has a long history of people dressing as members of cultures other than their own, raising important concerns surrounding cultural appropriation. For Native students and staff, these costumes can often cause an extreme level of discomfort due to how their culture is stereotyped, romanticized, and even sexualized. Similar concerns arise around holidays and traditions that portray the arrival of the Pilgrims, using simplified or stereotypical representations of Native people. Join Brad Lopes to discuss cultural appropriation related to Halloween costumes and other misrepresentations of Native Americans. A Zoom link will be provided upon registration Register here
