Studio Portrait Photography: One-Light Techniques with Andrea Sarcos Join Andrea for a hands-on studio photography workshop focused on creating compelling portraits using a single light source. This class guides students step by step through the studio portrait process—from setting up a simple studio, to directing a subject, to selecting, critiquing, and printing final images. Inspired by Andrea’s portraiture work created in her Arts Warehouse studio, participants will gain insight into her techniques, creative approach, and studio equipment. A professional model will be provided for students to photograph. This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience. What You’ll Learn How to set up a basic photography studio One-light studio lighting techniques Portrait composition and working with a subject How to direct a model for natural, expressive portraits Image selection and group critique Preparing and printing final images Class Format Part 1: Instruction, studio setup, and guided shooting Part 2: Group critique and printing What’s Included All studio materials and printing supplies Access to professional studio lighting and equipment Tangible printed images to take home A recommended equipment list for setting up your own studio New techniques and portfolio-ready work Participants should bring their own camera. A limited number of workshop DSLR cameras are available to borrow (2 total). Instructor Information: Andrea Sarcos Andrea is a freelance photographer, educator and interdisciplinary artist. Since 2018 she has taught photography classes to students K-12 as a Senior Artist in Residence at the Boys and Girls Club of Palm Beach County, the fifth largest Club organization in the United States. Sharing her knowledge of photography, she sparked interest in hundreds of young kids who have learned how to use digital cameras, tell a story visually, create interesting portraits and intentionally explore their communities. Andrea curates an annual group exhibit of her students’ best work of the year to be on display at Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt Gallery. Other exhibits of her students’ work include the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center in Belle Glade and the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta. She has led educational trips with National Geographic Student Expeditions and Putney Student Travel, focusing on photography while collaborating with experts in other fields like biology and science. Andrea is based in Boca Raton, Florida. Her work focuses on issues surrounding identity, migration, memory through the lens of visual storytelling.
