Jazz & Java: The Young Lions Movements in the 1960’s, 1980’s, & 2020’s

The Young Lions refers to movements in the 1960’s, 1980’s, & 2020’s. Some of the Jazz artists we will discuss and listen to include instrumentalists Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Wayne Shorter, Christian McBride, Patrick Bartley, Emmet Cohen, Alexa Tarantino, Mathis Picard and many others. The vocalists include Samara Joy, Veronica Swift, Ashley Pizzotti, Jazzmeia Horn, Laufey, Sarah Vaughan, etc. We will also celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, The class is suitable for all levels of Jazz Appreciation and will have live “Zooms” whenever possible. Instructor Bio: Professor Emeritus Richard Lowenthal has been teaching Jazz History, Conducting and Adjudicating Big Bands, and Performing on the trumpet for over 50 years. He founded and Chaired the Jazz Program at the prestigious conservatory, Manhattan School of Music and started the successful Jazz and Java Adult Education Program at the Arts Garage, which has been running for the past seven years.
