About this event

Arts & Culture

A Global Movement Built Locally  Since its launch in 2010, International Slow Art Day encourages slow looking and group reflection. This year the Asheville Art Museum joins nearly 150 other museums and galleries worldwide in celebration of slow looking.  On Saturday, April 11, noon–4pm, you’re invited to visit the Asheville Art Museum and experience art differently.  In a world that often encourages us to move quickly, International Slow Art Day is designed to help visitors pause, look closely, connect more deeply with a small selection of artworks, and engage in thoughtful conversation.  When people look slowly at a piece of art, they make discoveries. The most important discovery they make is that they are capable of looking at and loving art – and are often inspired to look more and return again and again.    What you’ll do…   Join Museum staff and volunteer educators for a day of slow looking that allows for a deeper, more intentional experience with works of art in the Collection.  You can join one of our 4 guided tours at noon, 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm, each of which includes slow looking followed by a short conversation about the experience over a complimentary cup of tea in our Perspective Café. Or pick up a written prompt at the Welcome Desk, enjoy looking slowly on your own and then join a drop-in conversation and free tea in our Digital Lounge.    Health and Wellbeing Benefits of Slow Looking  This intentional, mindful approach to looking at art has surprisingly powerful benefits for both mental and physical well-being.  The practice has been shown to reduce stress, calm the nervous system, lower blood pressure, improve mood, and reduce feelings of loneliness.  “When people gather to look at art and then talk about what they see, something important happens. They build trust. They listen. They connect. They remember that other people are not abstractions, but fellow human beings.” (2025 Slow Art Day Annual Report)
