Acclaimed jazz pianist and Origin Records recording artist Danny Green has earned recognition as a bandleader, performer, arranger, and composer, known for his introspective yet dynamic musical narratives. Green’s portfolio of vibrant sounds – an enchanting mix of jazz, classical, pop and Brazilian music – has captured the attention of critics around the world, including DownBeat magazine, Jazziz, The San Diego Union Tribune, The Boston Globe, and Public Radio International. Green revealed his unique talents on his 2009 debut recording With You in Mind, which rose to #18 on the Jazz Week Charts and won “Best Jazz Album” at the 2009 San Diego Music Awards. In 2012, Green released A Thousand Ways Home, featuring Justin Grinnell on bass, Julien Cantelm on drums, with special guests including Peter Sprague, Tripp Sprague, Chico Pinheiro, Claudia Villela, Eva Scow, and Dusty Brough. Two years later, Green's Trio released After The Calm on Origin Records, which won “Best Jazz Album” at the 2015 San Diego Music Awards and was nominated for “Album of the Year.” In 2016, Green's trio teamed up with producer Matt Pierson to record Altered Narratives at NYC's famed recording studio, Sear Sound. Three of the songs featured string quartet—a concept which Green would revisit for the entirety of his critically acclaimed 2018 release, One Day It Will. In 2026, Green released his first solo piano album on Origin Records entitled Let the Music Happen. Since 2015, Green has co-led LP And The Vinyl—a group that combines forces of Green's trio along with vocalist Leonard Patton. Their debut album Heard And Seen was released in April 2020 on Origin Records and features music by The Beatles, Quincy Jones, Tears for Fears, David Bowie, Oasis, as well as jazz standards, and original songs. Between the two groups, Green has toured throughout the United States and Canada, playing at major venues and festivals. Outside of his own projects, Green plays on a regular basis with guitarist Peter Sprague, and has performed with a number of other note-worthy musicians including Paquito D’Rivera, Chico Pinheiro, Charles McPherson, Claudia Villela, Pacho Flores, and The San Diego Symphony. Green is highly active as a jazz educator. In addition to his work as a private instructor, Green has given masterclasses and clinics throughout the United States, and has taught at numerous colleges and jazz camps. Green is also known as a highly skilled music arranger and transcriber. Throughout the years, Green has worked on thousands of arrangements and transcriptions for artists across the globe. In 2019, Green published a collection of Fred Hersch transcriptions under the guidance of Hersch entitled Fred Hersch Compositions: Eight Piano Transcriptions. Two years later, Green served as editor for Michael Lucke’s book of Hersch transcriptions entitled Fred Hersch Songs From Home: Complete Transcriptions for the Piano. The Athenaeum’s Mini-Concerts offer a weekly opportunity to experience live music in the intimate setting of the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Music Room. Presented every Monday at noon, the series features a diverse range of performers, from local and touring musicians to university faculty, chamber ensembles, and prize-winning students. Programs span classical music as well as jazz, folk, and world music. Founded by Glenna Hazleton in 1970, Mini-Concerts is one of the Athenaeum’s longest-running concert series. Each performance lasts approximately one hour and is free and open to the public. No reservations or tickets are required. Seating is first-come, first-served and limited. Doors open at 11:40 a.m. and close for entry at 12:10 p.m. or when capacity is reached. Donations are welcome.
