About the Lecture As Americans relaunched their federal government in the 1790s, they took the unusual step of building an entirely new city to serve as the nation’s capital. In dialogue with architects such as Pierre Charles L’Enfant and Andrew Ellicott, George Washington ushered into creation an urban space meant to display the nation’s ideals. From its inception, however, the District of Columbia was a contested space in which politicians debated the architectural choices giving shape to the city. About the Lecturer Jeffrey Young is a Principal Lecturer in the Department of History at Georgia State University. He spent his undergraduate years at Yale University and earned his Ph.D. from Emory University in 1996. He is the author of several books about slavery in the American South and has published articles in The Journal of Southern History and The Georgia Historical Quarterly. In 2018, the University System of Georgia recognized him with the Felton Jenkins Jr. Hall of Fame Award for Teaching Excellence, and in 2024 he received the Outstanding Teaching Award from the GSU College of Arts and Sciences.
