About the Lecture America went to war against Britain in 1812 for a number of reasons: British blockades prevented America from trading with Napoleonic France, Britain seized American sailors to serve in its navy, and disagreements continued about frontiers in the American north and west. The low point of the war—from the American point of view—was the British invasion of Washington D.C., which forced President Madison to flee the capital. The high point was America’s victory at the Battle of New Orleans. Never since 1815 have Britain and America fought one another. About the Lecturer Patrick Allitt is Cahoon Family Professor of American History. He was an undergraduate at Oxford in England (1974-1977), a graduate student at the University of California Berkeley (Ph.D., 1986), and held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Divinity School and Princeton University.
