Community Workshops

$150 for Members $270 for Non-Members In this two-session class, writers will explore the different aspects of the revision process through the lens of their own short story or novel excerpt. Through craft readings, discussions, and targeted exercises, students will bring renewed energy and fresh perspectives to their work in progress. Writers at every stage can be daunted by the process of revision. It’s easy to see that something we’ve written isn’t working; it’s much harder to pinpoint why it isn’t working. In this class, we will break the revision process into separate pieces in order to better understand it. Each week’s class will include craft readings, group discussions, and writing exercises to help us return to our own work with new techniques. Whether you are working on a short story or a novel, this two-session class will give you confidence to return to your projects with renewed energy and fresh perspectives. This is an in-person class series, taking place in Austin, TX. This class series will be held in the Munday Library (3001 S Congress Ave Building LIBR, Austin, TX 78704) at the St. Edwards College campus across two Saturdays. It will not be recorded, or made available online. There will be paid parking ($6/day) available onsite if you pre-register your car. There is also a bus stop within walking distance, serving route 1 and route 486. More details will be provided prior to the first class date. Individual Class Details Class 1 (April 18 from 1:00-4:00 PM CDT): The Big Picture: Taking a step back from our manuscripts, we’ll get a long shot of our plot and structure choices that allows us to see what rooms may still need to be added and what walls might need to come down. We’ll also examine our characters and how to best render them on the page through the power of exposition, interiority, and point of view choices. Class 2 (April 25 from 1:00-4:00 PM CDT) A Closer Look: As the next draft of your piece begins to clarify for you, we’ll revisit the ideas and inspirations that first drew us to our project and track how its themes may have evolved. Then we’ll hone in on the micro elements of revision by focusing elevating and refining dialogue as well as achieving maximum clarity and power in our sentences. TAKE THIS CLASS IF: You find the first draft much easier than everything that comes after. You’ve gotten stuck mid-revision. You have a lot of “mostly-done” projects but rarely feel “done-done.” The deadline to register for this class is Friday, April 17 at 5:00 PM CDT. CONTINUING YOUR WRITING JOURNEY SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION The WLT is committed to making our online classes accessible to all writers including writers who do not have the financial means to pay for programming.
