Cooper Black Jr. Recreation Area in Cheraw, South Carolina, featuring South Carolina Barbecue Association (SCBA) teams competing in a pork butt only contest. For spectators, the appeal is getting up close to the process: teams setting up, trimming and seasoning meat, managing cookers, and staying busy as turn-in time gets closer. While SCBA judging happens behind the scenes, the action on the grounds is easy to follow. Attendees can walk the cook sites, watch teams work, and then stick around for the awards, when prize money and trophies are presented. Since this is an outdoor recreation-area setting, it helps to keep an eye on the weather but plan for a casual day outside.
