Join us on the Bell Museum’s Learning Landscape to observe and ask questions about the process of measuring, cataloging, and preparing natural history specimens! In an expedition-style set up outside of the museum, a team of students and scientists will work together to demonstrate how scientific collections are created. Visitors will watch the team work together to process collected organisms and take various data, preserve different types of samples, and produce specimens for the Bell’s natural history collections. The Bell Museum is an active research institution utilized by scientists around the world! Schedule for the week: August 11: Birds, Fish, Amphibians, and Reptiles Highlights: Swan from Lisa Ramezzano, small birds from Tettegouche State Park, with Kurt Mead and from Two Harbors DNR August 12: Mammals, Fish, Amphibians, and Reptiles Highlights: raccoons (one from Eagle Bluff Learning Center, one from Emily Snell-Rood, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Ecology, Evolution & Behavior, University of Minnesota, a weasel from Windom DNR (Kimberly Emerson), and a bobcat with Dakota Rowsey from Science Museum of Minnesota August 13: Birds, Fish, Amphibians, and Reptiles Highlights: birds from Stop the Thud project August 14: Plants, Mammals, Insects, Fish, Amphibians, and Reptiles Highlights: otters from Windom DNR (Kimberly Emerson) and the Bell Museum, spreading moth and butterfly wings, dissecting oak galls, and large-bodied moths August 15: Birds and Plants Highlights: Sawwhet owl from Two Harbors DNR, Boreal Owl from Tettegouche State Park, with Kurt Mead and plants This is an in-person event at the Bell Museum.
