This 2-day workshop is an introduction to the rich, colorful, traditional material called smalti, a Byzantine glass that has been part of the mosaic-making traditions in Europe for centuries. Smalti is colorful and holds light and texture uniquely. Students will have the opportunity to work with this unique material and learn about its applications and cutting. Participants will create a small smalti mosaic artwork while learning about cutting, tools like the hammer & hardie, thinset mortar and the use of color, light and texture in mosaics. Brenda L. Montanile is a contemporary mosaic artist based in Puerto Rico. Her education includes study with leading masters in the field; she is classically trained in traditional tools and techniques. With nearly twenty years of study, her practice reflects a deep dedication to mosaic as both discipline and devotion.
