King and Dinah Washington at the original Fillmore and ran with a young Etta James before the world knew her name. Born Clarence Sims in Baton Rouge in 1934, he cut the jump blues classic You Got the Nerve of a Brass Monkey, then lived the story the Hughes Brothers filmed in their 1999 documentary American Pimp. The blues won him back: a West Coast Blues Hall of Fame induction in 2008, the Lowell Fulson Jus' Blues Award in 2011, and a stage presence nobody else alive can match.
