Free event to anyone attending any of our five Fringe events TROMPE is • Taylor Ho Bynum – cornet • Je4 Song – cello • Daniel Lin – cello Taylor Ho Bynum has spent his career exploring the intersections of structure and improvisation through composition, performance, interdisciplinary collaboration, teaching, writing, production, and organizing. His expressionistic cornet playing and expansive vision as a composer have earned critical acclaim across more than twenty recordings as a bandleader and dozens more as a sideman. His wide-ranging work includes his Acoustic Bicycle Tours, during which he travels thousands of miles by bicycle to perform concerts, and his stewardship of Anthony Braxton’s Tri-Centric Foundation, where he served as executive director from 2010–2018. During that time, he produced and performed on numerous major Braxton projects, including two operas and multiple festivals. Bynum has worked with such legendary figures as Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor, and Wadada Leo Smith, and maintains ongoing collaborations with artists including Tomas Fujiwara, Mary Halvorson, and Tomeka Reid. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, Point of Departure, and Sound American. He has also served as a panelist, board member, and consultant for leading arts organizations and individual artists. Je4 Song (he/him) is a musician, composer, actor, visual artist, and New England Foundation for the Arts grant recipient. He holds a BA in Anthropology from Boston University and an MM from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Ran Blake, Joe Maneri, and others. Fluent in a wide range of musical languages, Je4 has been active in improvised and experimental music, jazz, rock, and Americana for more than 30 years. Primarily a bass guitarist and cellist, he has also performed and recorded on guitar, piano, oud, and kayagum. Je4 has performed at festivals around the world and appears on more than a dozen recordings. His original music has been featured on radio, television, and at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. As touring bassist for Ute Lemper, he performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Istanbul Jazz Festival, L’Opéra de Vichy, and the Palermo Festival di Verdura. He has also composed original music for theater productions in Boston, Baltimore, and Washington, DC. Daniel Lin (he/him) is a multidisciplinary improviser, composer, and memory worker active in jazz and Black Creative Music communities. He has recently performed with Bill Cole, Taylor Ho Bynum, Ras Moshe, Warren Smith, Bill Lowe, Tomeka Reid, Alexander Hawkins, Joseph Daley, Althea SullyCole, Je4 Song, and Eli Hecht. His practice emphasizes collective improvisation and deep listening, drawing inspiration from the music’s histories of liberation, social justice, radical organization, and solidarity. Now based in Baltimore, Maryland, Lin divides his time between performing and composing music, acting and music directing for theater, and working in libraries and archives.
