Plein Air Painting Event Part of the Reflections Series: In the Footsteps of Frederic Edwin Church Saturday, August 22, 2026 | 10:00 AM–3:00 PM Camp Rhodora (The Woodworth Homestead), Millinocket, Maine Join Boreal Theater for a special day of plein air painting at the Woodworth Homestead (Rhodora), the historic camp once owned by renowned American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church. It was here that Church spent time exploring and painting the Katahdin region, creating studies that would later contribute to his celebrated work Mount Katahdin from Millinocket Camp. Surrounded by the same landscapes that inspired one of America’s greatest artists, participants will have the opportunity to paint outdoors, working directly from nature in the tradition of plein air painting. This summer artistic event follows the successful student plein air painting program held at Rhodora in June and invites artists of all ages and experience levels to experience the landscape through observation, creativity, and personal expression. Whether you are an experienced painter, a beginner, or simply curious about creating art outdoors, this event offers a unique opportunity to connect with art, history, and place while enjoying one of the region’s most significant cultural landscapes. What to Expect Participants will: Create artwork inspired by the landscapes of the Katahdin region Experience plein air painting in a historic setting Develop skills in observation, composition, and creative expression Connect with fellow artists and community members Explore the artistic legacy of Frederic Edwin Church Contribute to the ongoing Reflections Series Artists are welcome to work in any medium, including watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel, drawing, or mixed media. Participants should bring their own supplies, portable easels, chairs, water, lunch, and weather-appropriate clothing. Celebration of Art The afternoon will conclude with a special Celebration of Art, featuring an informal viewing of the day’s work alongside wine, cheese, and conversation. Participants and guests will have the opportunity to share their experiences, discuss their artwork, and enjoy the company of fellow artists and community members in this remarkable setting. Registration Registration details coming soon. Space will be limited, and advance registration will be encouraged.
