Student Plein Air Painting at Rhodora Part of the Reflections Series Project Join Boreal Theater for a student plein air painting experience at the Woodworth Homestead (“Rhodora”) in Millinocket as part of the Reflections Series Project: In the Footsteps of Frederic Edwin Church. Created in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Frederic Edwin Church’s birth, this two-year arts and cultural initiative connects community, creativity, history, and landscape through immersive artistic experiences rooted in the Katahdin region. During this workshop, students will create artwork outdoors in direct response to the landscape, exploring the practice of plein air painting — painting “in the open air” — inspired by the same natural environment that influenced Church’s work in the Katahdin region. Through observation, sketching, and painting, students will: Explore light, atmosphere, and composition Develop creative expression through direct observation Connect art, regional history, and environmental awareness Reflect on personal and cultural relationships to place The workshop curriculum introduces students to the history and traditions of plein air painting and the Hudson River School, with a focus on Frederic Edwin Church and landscape painting in Maine. This program is part of Boreal Theater’s broader Reflections Series Project, which includes workshops, exhibitions, artist talks, and a culminating community art exhibition celebrating creativity, heritage, and the Maine landscape.
