How do two people from very different places and backgrounds meet in Cody, Wyoming and begin a friendship and creative collaboration that spans three decades? Through personal stories and rarely seen photographs, Audrey Hall and Chase Reynolds Ewald share the people, places, projects, and adventures that have shaped their work together—from the unlikely pitch for BISON: Portrait of an Icon in a UPS Store parking lot to books, assignments, and other adventures across the American West. Earlier this year, a historic opportunity hatched over Christmas dinner sent them on a cross-country road trip during the depths of winter following three monumental bison sculptures from a Colorado foundry to the steps of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Part friendship story, part creative journey, the conversation offers a behind-the-scenes look at thirty years of collaboration—and the unexpected moments, relationships, and leaps of faith that have shaped the work along the way. Chase’s Cody connections run deep: a former pack cook and wrangler at various Cody dude ranches, she also wrote By Western Hands; Functional Art from the Heart of the West. About Audrey Hall: http://www.audreyhall.com Audrey Hall is a photographer based in Montana and Santa Fe whose work explores the relationship between people and the landscapes of the American West. Through fine art, documentary, editorial, and architectural photography, she examines how place influences identity through the stories we tell, the homes we build, and the symbols we carry forward. Born in Brazil and raised in a multicultural family with deep roots in the arts and sciences, Hall found her personal compass during childhood summers in Montana and Wyoming. The scale, solitude, and grit of those wild places fostered an independent spirit that continues to shape her work. Her award-winning book BISON: Portrait of an Icon explores the natural and cultural history of the American bison through photography and essays. The project received a National Outdoor Book Award, a PubWest Silver Award, and the High Plains Book Award for Art and Photography, and was a finalist for the Reading the West and Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History Director Kirk Johnson contributed to the book, beginning a relationship that would later lead to a collaboration with the museum. In 2026, the Smithsonian invited Hall to document the journey of three monumental bronze bison sculptures from a Colorado foundry to their permanent installation at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. From that journey, she created a hand-printed platinum-palladium photograph that now rests inside a time capsule beneath the museum’s 2,500-pound bronze bull bison. Hall’s photographs are held in the TIA Collection, which lends significant works to museums and cultural institutions internationally. She is currently co-directing Dear Western Sky, a documentary supported by the Montana Department of Commerce’s Big Sky Film Grant, and collaborating with author Chase Reynolds Ewald on Campfire: A Return to Wild Living. Their eighth book together celebrates the rituals of summer in the American West and the enduring ways landscape, architecture, and shared traditions draw us into deeper connection with people and place.
