Blood Memory: The Tragic Decline and Improbable Resurrection of the American Buffalo Featuring a Virtual Appearance by Dayton Duncan Tuesday, August 12, 2026 | Noon | Park County Library Join the McCracken Research Library for a special Bison Book Club discussion of Blood Memory: The Tragic Decline and Improbable Resurrection of the American Buffalo by Dayton Duncan and Ken Burns. This compelling work explores the remarkable story of the American bison—from near extinction to one of the greatest conservation success stories in history. Written as a companion to the acclaimed PBS documentary The American Buffalo, Blood Memory draws on firsthand accounts, historical records, and expert interviews to trace the bison’s profound influence on the North American landscape and the people who depended upon it. Publishers Weekly describes the book as “elegiac,” noting that it will “bring readers to tears, then fill them with hope.” The volume also features archival photographs, artwork, and objects from the collections of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. Adding to this unique discussion, award-winning writer and filmmaker Dayton Duncan will join participants virtually for a special guest appearance. Duncan has collaborated with Ken Burns for more than three decades, serving as writer and producer on celebrated PBS documentaries including Lewis & Clark, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, and The American Buffalo. The discussion will take place in person at the Park County Public Library in Cody, with a virtual attendance option available via Zoom. Presented by the McCracken Research Library at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in partnership with the Park County Public Library.
