Kelly Goto is an author, designer, and storyteller. Her book, “Seattle Samurai: A Cartoonist’s Perspective of the Japanese American Experience” recently won a Pacific Northwest Book Award. Inspired by her father Sam Goto’s comic strip, “Seattle Tomodachi,” “Seattle Samurai” is a cultural exploration that captures the Japanese American experience through the lens of her father’s cartoons and illustrative stories. This is a free event and books will be available for sale and signing. Sam Goto created the character Samurai Shigeru in the comic strip “Seattle Tomodachi,” telling the stories of the first Japanese immigrants and their descendants in the Pacific Northwest. His comics blend Japanese culture and tradition with his own experiences of balancing the samurai values of loyalty, honor, and honesty while pursuing the American dream. The book honors Sam Goto’s artistic legacy, and also provides an understanding of how Japanese culture and samurai values influence the newest generation’s attitudes and behaviors. The compilation of his work in this book was a deeply personal journey, threading together family history and forming a tapestry of identity, culminating in a profound sense of coming home. Kelly Goto connects culture, history, and the human experience, reflecting a deep commitment to cultural preservation and accessibility. Her other books include “Web ReDesign: Strategies for Success” and “Beyond Usable: Mapping Emotion to Experience.” She lives in Seattle, where she leads both gotomedia and gotoresearch, driving innovative human-centered design and product research on a global scale.
