In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore real-life scenarios and learn how to confidently respond to common trail situations, including encounters with bears, snakes, and even aggressive dogs. We will also cover how to identify and avoid hazards like poison ivy, what essential lightweight gear to carry, such as backup water filters and emergency shelter, and how to plan your hikes more effectively using modern tools and apps. Rooted in the Trailbound Project’s mission to empower hikers through education, this workshop also reflects the Catskill Center’s commitment to fostering responsible recreation, protecting the region’s natural resources, and connecting people to the outdoors in meaningful ways. By building awareness, preparedness, and respect for the landscape, programs like this help ensure the Catskills remain a safe and sustainable place for all to explore. Whether you are new to hiking or looking to refine your skills, you will walk away with practical knowledge to help you stay safe and prepared on the trail. Advance registration is required. A $15 fee applies, with all proceeds supporting the Catskill Center.
