The exhibition will be on view from July 1 – August 29, with a reception on July 3 from 5-8pm. Featuring works across painting, photography, installation, collage, drawing, and mixed media, the exhibition reflects on the enduring impact of artistic communities and the ways creative ideas continue to resonate beyond the spaces that first brought them together. Taking its title from the visual phenomenon in which an image remains visible after its source has disappeared, Afterimage explores themes of memory, transformation, identity, ecology, place, belonging, and resilience. The exhibition brings together artists whose practices engage personal and collective histories, relationships to the natural world, and the evolving ways individuals navigate an increasingly complex contemporary landscape. While the artists represented in the exhibition work across a wide range of media and conceptual approaches, many share an interest in transformation and continuity. Their works examine cycles of growth and decay, acts of preservation and repair, cultural memory, environmental stewardship, and the ways individuals navigate shifting social and personal realities. Together, these perspectives create a rich and multifaceted conversation about what endures through change. Presented following the closure of Strata Gallery, Afterimage is not a retrospective of the organization, but rather a reflection on the broader creative community it helped foster. Since its founding in 2021, Strata Gallery served as a membership-based nonprofit gallery dedicated to supporting contemporary artists and creating opportunities for dialogue, experimentation, and public engagement. Over five years, the gallery presented exhibitions by emerging and established artists, fostering a dynamic creative community that extended far beyond the gallery walls. Afterimage celebrates the artists, ideas, and connections that emerged through Strata’s history while recognizing their continued influence beyond the life of the gallery. The exhibition recognizes not only the accomplishments of individual artists, but also the collective impact of a community built through shared curiosity, creative risk-taking, and sustained engagement with contemporary art.
