• A CMH holiday tradition returns with one of the biggest sounds of the season. Holiday Brass brings together a 13-piece brass ensemble, the Orvis Choral Scholars of the Cathedral of St. Andrew, organ, timpani, and percussion for a festive concert that fills the cathedral with warmth, brilliance, and joy. Featuring more than 20 musicians in one of Honolulu’s most beautiful spaces, this annual favorite surrounds audiences with soaring brass, powerful voices, and the unmistakable sound of the holidays. Bring family, bring friends, and celebrate the season with a concert that feels grand, joyful, and deeply rooted in tradition. Program: Holiday favorites, festive brass arrangements, and choral selections for the season. These professional-level singers include university students, choral music teachers, and vocalists with American and European training. Some hold advanced degrees in music, and all are experienced in various aspects of singing including opera theater, musicals, symphony chorus, and numerous choral ensembles in Hawaii and beyond. The Orvis Choral Scholars are involved not only in singing at services and concerts throughout the year, but also with liturgy, music development, and fundraising. Some of the Scholars also serve as section leaders for the Hawaiian Choir. Mark Wong Mark D. Wong is an organist and pianist with an extensive career. He has served as Organist at various churches around O‘ahu, including St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Kailua and the Lutheran Church of Honolulu. For many years, Mark performed as a pianist and soloist with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. Mark also has decades of experience performing on other various keyboard instruments with orchestras, choruses, chamber music groups, instrumental and vocal soloists, and in solo recital. Mark’s experience as an organist is matched by his knowledge of the organ as an instrument, including its design and maintenance. Mark is directly responsible for the tonal design, installation, and voicing of two major organs in Honolulu, including the digital organ now installed in the chancel of Kawaiha‘o Church. In Mark’s capacity as Organist at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, he is also the curator of the Cathedral’s historic Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ. Honolulu Brass Since its inception in 1976, the Honolulu Brass Quintet (HBQ) has performed throughout Honolulu and the state of Hawai‘i. As one of three resident ensembles regularly presented by Chamber Music Hawai‘i, HBQ offers full-length brass performances in premier venues across its home island of O‘ahu, performing regularly at the Doris Duke Theatre and Blue Note Hawaii in Honolulu, as well as the Palikū Theatre on the Windward side of O‘ahu. Renowned for its versatility, HBQ performs throughout the state for a wide range of audiences in different formats outside of the concert hall, such as free public performances at libraries and community centers, education and church services, and for private parties. In recent seasons, the quintet has been honored to perform for the Hawai‘i Concert Society in Hilo and at the St. Damien of Moloka‘i Church. HBQ regularly performs educational shows throughout Kaua‘i, Lana‘i, Maui, Moloka‘i, O‘ahu, and most recently served a residency at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. The members of the quintet are all full-time professional musicians, performing regularly with the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra and Royal Hawaiian Band, in addition to teaching privately through the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, BYU Hawai‘i, Punahou and ‘Iolani. This unique combination of talents guarantees the highest level of musical artistry, enriching the musical life of Hawai‘i through HBQ’s dynamic performances and unwavering commitment to the arts.
