Crabbing the Miles River Friday, Sept. 4 | 6-10am Late summer is the most bountiful time of the year for crabbing on the Miles River. On Friday, Sept. 4, we are pleased to offer morning crabbing on a historic vessel with our knowledgeable volunteer crew. We will deploy one of two of the most common methods for harvesting crabs on the Chesapeake and its tributaries: the trot line. A trot line is a baited line set and then lifted from shallow bottoms with crabs being harvested using a wire dip net. Expect to learn about the history of crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay, its importance to the culture and economy, how the fishery has defined various traditional vessel forms; and how to bait, set, and work a trotline. Join us to watch the sunrise over the often-placid waters of the Miles River while experiencing what it’s like to work the water through catch-and-release crabbing. Space is limited to six participants for this program—Don’t wait to reserve your spot! Crabbing the Miles River is also being offered on Aug. 28, Sept. 11, Sept. 18, and Sept. 25. The simple line works just fine: This program is supported through CBMM’s Regional Folklife Center under the Maryland Traditions program of the Maryland State Arts Council.
