Rigging 101: Uprigging a Skipjack Saturday-Sunday, March 14-15 What better way to learn the basic methodology, principles, and terminology of rigging than getting a historic skipjack ready for the coming sailing season? Join Vessel Conservation Manager Sam Hilgartner and CBMM volunteers on the weekend of March 14-15 for Rigging 101 to get hands-on experience rigging 1955 skipjack Rosie Parks. When you arrive for the weekend course, the historic vessel will have no spars aboard, no push boat, no sails bent on. At the end of the day on Sunday, we will be ready to set sail on the Miles River. Below are just a few of the skills that we will cover in this introductory class: Basic knot tying Lashmanship Hardware installation Splicing Whipping How to reave blocks Tuning standing rigging Bending on sail Anatomy of a sloop rig Anatomy of a traditional sail Communications protocols when working aloft This program is supported by CBMM’s Regional Folklife Center under the Maryland Traditions program of the Maryland State Arts Council.
