About this event
One of 10 upcoming events at Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust.
Dive into the world of eelgrass with a guided paddle on Great Salt Bay If you missed the July tour, we are offering two additional opportunities to grab your paddle and join us for a scenic guided tour of Great Salt Bay’s vibrant eelgrass beds, one of our coastline’s most vital hidden ecosystems! This is the second of three scheduled tours. Led by Devin Domeyer (Coastal Resiliency Specialist, Maine Coastal Program) and Sarah Gladu (Director of Community Science, Coastal Rivers), this hands-on paddle will take you up close to a fascinating marine plant. You’ll learn how to identify eelgrass and its developing seeds, discover how it fights climate change through carbon sequestration, and find out how it provides a critical nursery for local marine life. We will also share the exciting details behind our newly funded, 7-year eelgrass restoration project right here in the bay! A third paddle is scheduled for September 18 from 2 – 3:30 p.m. What to Bring & Logistics Watercraft: You may either bring your own kayak or canoe (and paddles), or borrow a kayak. Safety gear: A lifejacket (PFD) is required for all participants (we can loan you one if you do not have one). Personal comfort: We highly recommend sunscreen, water, and a sun hat. Age limit: This event is open to paddlers ages 12 and up. Furry friends: Please leave your dogs at home for this program. Drop-Off & Parking Instructions 2:00 PM: If you are bringing your own kayak or canoe, drop your boat and gear off at the Oyster Creek boat access. Park: Drive and park your car at Salt Bay Farm. Launch: A Coastal Rivers guide will meet you at the farm and lead a scenic, 10-to-15-minute gentle walk back down to the boat launch so we can get out on the water! Spaces are limited.
