About this event

Workshops

Taught by Wilderness Medical Associates International Be prepared for your outdoor adventures! Wilderness First Aid is the ideal course for outdoor enthusiasts on overnight or short term wilderness adventures. Students will be able to recognize medical emergencies, and will become familiar with basic life saving skills, patient assessment, and basic field care for common injuries. Course topics include patient assessment and emergency care, musculoskeletal injuries, environmental medicine, management of wounds, non-technical lifting, moving, and extrication of patients, and more. The Wilderness First Aid curriculum involves a minimum of 16 hours of instruction. In-class learning involves lecture, discussion, patient assessment drills, and skills labs. Students are encouraged to use their textbook to expand their knowledge after the course. Prior to enrolling, please review WMA International’s Functional Position Description. The criteria in this policy allow students to self-assess their ability to meet the demands of a WMA International course as well as the demands of a certified wilderness medical provider in the field. This course is pass/fail. Participants must attend both full days. Evaluation is based on practical patient simulations, hands-on activities, and a written test. WMA International is committed to making reasonable accommodation for any student with special needs. We will meet from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. both days, with about an hour off for lunch, and breaks throughout the day. We will be outside for at least half of the day, regardless of the weather.  Please be prepared, wear close-toed shoes, and bring the things you need to be comfortable both outside and inside. Participants are responsible for their own food and snacks. Please note, we will not be able to issue refunds after June 1. Please register using the form below. Not sure whether your membership is current? Please email Megan and she can let you know. Meet your instructor – Eric Duffy! Eric Duffy has spent his career at the intersection of education, wilderness trip leading, and emergency medical care. He is a Registered Nurse, a Wilderness EMT, and a Registered Maine Guide. Eric has been active as an instructor for Wilderness Medical Associates International since 2000, and has held leadership positions with some of Maine’s most highly regarded independent schools and outdoor education programs. When not teaching for WMAI, he works as a clinical nurse in an emergency clinic and as a professional sea kayaking guide in the summers.
