A super special weeklong intensive for young artists, aged 13 and up! Learn to transform thread into cloth and weave on a floor loom! Weeklong Teen Intensive: Weaving with Margaret Dugger Date: Monday, July 20 – Friday, July, 24 Time: 10am – 5pm (daily!) Description: Learn to transform thread into cloth using magical spells such as math, songs, design, planning, rhythm, an so on! Learn to decipher historic weaving codes and write your own, while weaving on the “world’s first computer” (the loom)! In this introductory weaving class designed for young artists, Margaret will share their love of the craft and will guide students through the full process of using a floor loom! From initial design ideas, through super fun weaving math, onto the loom and off, and over to sewing machines and sergers to complete works of art; this weeklong workshop is a serious dive into the craft of weaving. Students in this workshop will weave on the same type of floor looms that Contemporary Craft artists-in-residence, community weavers, weaving instructors, and students within the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University weave on! These are multi-harness floor looms, which means that there are really neat, magical, and complex (but approachably complex!) possibilities for patterns and weave structures! At the close of the week, friends and family will be invited to attend a special celebration and showcase of the students’ work! This promises to be a fun adventure! But, wait! What exactly will we make?? Think rectangles….. towels, placemats, scarves, totebags ….. it’s up to you!!!!! Those are just some of the possibilities! Margaret will assist you in deciding exactly what to make and how to do it! No experience with weaving, yarn, sewing, etc is expected or required. This is a beginner-friendly course! Tuition: $425 + $35 materials fee Note: We really want you to join us in the studio! Full and partial tuition scholarships are available to offset some of the financial burden of attending a class. Please fill out the application here! You can expect to hear from someone on the CC staff within 2 weeks.
