Two ways to take part in Innovation & Integrity Days 2026. Kick off Innovation & Integrity Days with our annual Innovation Day. Meet the people building what’s next — innovators and trailblazers presenting the technologies and ideas reshaping how we advance trusted research. It’s an energising way to close out 2026 and seed ideas for the year ahead. Check out our recap from last year’s Innovation Day Adam Day, Founding Director, ClearSkies Sue Hodgson, Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, Cashmere Laura Simis, Director of Marketing, Hum Ravi Venkataramani, CEO, Kriyadocs Moderated by Martijn Roelandse, Consultant, Park 56 AI is reshaping scholarly publishing. Authors, reviewers and publishers can now automate work at scale, while entrepreneurs can build powerful tools faster and more cheaply than ever. The result is an AI arms race: capabilities spread quickly, barriers to entry fall, and competitive advantages are harder to sustain. This raises a key question: what is worth building, buying or backing when the technology itself is becoming commoditised? Where does durable value lie: in proprietary data, workflow integration, distribution, scale, network effects, or trust? Bringing together perspectives from publishing, technology, investment and entrepreneurship, this session will explore what organisations are investing in as AI accelerates, and whether we are creating lasting trust infrastructure or simply making every side of the race faster and cheaper. Tiago Barros, Co-founder, Signals Amye Kenall, Chief Product Officer, Digital Science Ian Mulvany, CTO, BMJ Tim Tait-Jamieson, Head of Publication Ethics, MDPI Followed by a Drinks Reception sponsored by Silverchair Join us for day two of Innovation & Integrity Days — an immersion in the latest thinking on research integrity. The day is built around collaboration: surfacing shared challenges and working toward a stronger, cross-disciplinary foundation for the future. Led by experts and shaped by the people in the room, in a collaborative format. You will: Catch the recap from last year’s Research Integrity Day Moderated by Marie Soulière, Head of Editorial Ethics and Quality Assurance, Frontiers “AI-hallucinated citations” has become the default explanation whenever a reference list doesn’t check out. But is that framing accurate, or just convenient? Long before LLMs, reference lists were being corrupted by automated DOI-matching and metadata-enrichment tools that fuzzy-match titles, author names, and years against CrossRef or other registries. When a cited work has no DOI (common for older papers, conference proceedings, regional journals, or non-English literature), these tools can silently attach the wrong DOI, or apply other wrong fixes, producing a reference that doesn’t correspond to any single actual paper. This session challenges the label of so-called AI-hallucinated and fabricated references and will walk through the broad taxonomy of broken references publishers and vendors are finding in production and published papers, examine where each type might originate, and debate what solutions are available to researchers, publishers, and typesetters. Guillaume Cabanac, Professor of Computer Science, University of Toulouse Chris Leonard, Director, Product Solutions, Cactus Communications Limited Sureshkumar Parandhaman, VP of publishing solutions, Integra Kathryn Weber-Boer, Director, Scientometrics – Scientometric Researcher Engagement, Digital Science Moderated by Luigi Longobardi, Director, Publishing Ethics & Conduct, IEEE This practitioner-focused panel offers a candid look into complex, large-scale, and novel research integrity investigations handled across academic publishing. Moving beyond polished success stories, panelists will present short, anonymized case studies detailing the challenges faced, how unexpected issues were managed, and the key lessons learned from each case. Alice Darlington, Publishing Ethics Expert, Elsevier Kim Eggleton, Head of Peer Review & Research Integrity, IOP Publishing Catriona Leslie, Research Integrity Auditor Manager, Frontiers Moderated by Jennifer Wright, Head of Publication Ethics and Research Integrity, Cambridge University Press For years, discussions about research integrity have highlighted the role of incentive structures in shaping researcher behaviour. In this session, we will take stock of progress to date with a panel of experts, examining current initiatives, practical interventions, and the steps needed to foster a research culture that better supports integrity, transparency, and quality. Monica Westin, Director of Open Policy Development, CUP Anna Abalkina, Research Fellow, Institute for East European Studies, Freie Universität Berlin Matt Spick, Lecturer in Health and Biomedical Data Analytics, University of Surrey Gengyan Tang, PhD candidate at the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary Helena Cousijn, Director of Programs and Services, Crossref In col
