After 16 years, she reconnects with her brother Big, an accomplished fighter in the local MMA scene. To earn her brother’s respect, Lil must master her stance, her strikes, and her stubborn streak. But can these two siblings mend their thorny past and find common ground in the ring they both love? Currently playing Off-Broadway to critical acclaim, The Monsters is a play with heart, humor and the fierce love only a sibling can give. Ngozi Anyanwu is a multi-hyphenated storyteller coming fresh off her professional directing debut with THE MONSTERS (Lucille Lortel, Drama League and Outer Critic Circle Award nominated) at Two River Theater in conjunction with Manhattan Theatre Club. She’ll also be starring in the West Coast Premiere of THE MONSTERS at Berkley Rep in conjunction with LaJolla Playhouse. Her previous plays include LEROY and LUCY Steppenwolfe Theater(Jeffrey award nominated), LAST OF THE LOVE LETTERS at the Atlantic Theater Company, GOOD GRIEF (Vineyard Theatre NYtime’s Critic’s pick in NYC / Center Theatre Group in LA, ) and THE HOMECOMING QUEEN (sold-out world premiere run and a NYtimes’s Critic’s pick at the Atlantic Theatre). GOOD GRIEF was on the Kilroys List 2016 and a semi finalist for the Princess Grace Award, and won the Humanitas Award. Her play NIKE… (Kilroys List 2017) was workshopped at The New Black Fest in conjunction with The Lark and The Strand Festival in conjunction with A.C.T and Space on Ryder Farm and New York Stage and Film. Ngozi also has been commissioned by NYU, The Old Globe, Two Rivers Theatre, The Atlantic Theatre, and Steppenwolfe. Anyanwu has also received residencies from LCT3, The National Black Theatre, Space on Ryder Farm, the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, The New Harmony Project, New York Stage and Film and Page 73. She attended Point Park University (BA) and received her MFA in Acting from University of California, San Diego.
