About this event
One of 738 upcoming events at Downtown Ithaca Alliance.
Chestnut Review, an international literary magazine and press founded in Ithaca in 2019, is proud to present 8 writers as part of our first domestic long fiction retreat: Nicole Caputo, Chelsea Dodds, David Hutto, Carolyn Keller, Susan Morse, Peter Stine, Lon Sullivan, and Rhonda Zimlich. CR publishes poetry, flash, short fiction, and visual art quarterly online and annually in a print anthology. We are always open for submissions, respond in <30 days, and pay $120 per piece. We offer offer free submissions for 1-3 poems, flash (up to 1k words), and art, and $5 submissions for short fiction (up to 5k words), as well as paid feedback options for all submissions for a small fee. Our press publishes four chapbooks a year (poetry, prose, or hybrid); our autumn reading period is open now through October 31st. Our tagline is, "for stubborn artists." The chestnut blight that wiped out 4 billion (billion!) trees in North America in the early years of the last century didn’t kill the stumps. So when those trees were cut down, in many places the stumps still send up young shoots over and over, and when they get old enough, the blight hits them and they die. And yet they send up another. And another. Sustaining a creative practice requires that level of tenacity. Artists persist despite rejection, the intrusions of real life, the bills that must be paid, the jobs that must be done before any art can be created–that’s the best kind of stubbornness. A stubborn belief in your own worth, in the art of your hands, eyes, and mind.
