Shaker Oval Box Making Workshop Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2026 8:30 am – 4:00 pm Learn how to make your own nest of Shaker oval boxes in our Shaker Oval Box Making Workshop. Guided by experienced box maker John Cashman, you will make five (5) Shaker Oval Nesting Boxes, from Pennsylvania cherry wood. The class will focus on preparing the wood, cutting swallowtail fingers, bending the sides and rims, and applying a finish. These iconic Shaker oval boxes are made with copper tacks and wooden pegs using the same techniques practiced by the Shaker brothers in their workshops. No previous woodworking experience necessary. Beginners are welcome! Students who have completed the basic class are welcome back to build an assortment of larger boxes, trays, and carriers. All tools and materials supplied. Students can bring their own eye and ear protection and dust masks, but we will have enough on hand for everyone. We will break for an hour each day for lunch. There are a couple of meal options nearby, but they are limited. Consider bringing a bag lunch and water/beverage. Museum Member – $265/person Non-Member – $285/person Materials Fee – $25/per person, paid directly to the instructor Class size is limited to 12. Advance registration is required. All proceeds from this workshop go to support the educational mission of Enfield Shaker Museum. Coming from a distance? Why not plan to stay overnight in the historic Great Stone Dwelling? Check out room availability here. Check our Events Calendar for other events happening this weekend. Want to know more about John Cashman? John Cashman has been making oval boxes for over 15 years. He’s been an avid student of box making, studying both original Shaker-made boxes and modern production methods. He’s made boxes as small as a quarter, and as large as a coffee table. John sells his boxes through the Shaker museum shops at Enfield, NH and Sabbathday Lake, Maine. He’s recently had a nest of 15 boxes exhibited at The Fuller Craft Museum.
