Curiosity Cafe: The Midnight Ride of William Dawes

Lunchtime Curiosity Cafe Second Wednesday of the month from 12-1pm at the Evanston History Center, 225 Greenwood St. FREE, no RSVP needed. Come to the Dawes House for coffee, lunch, and informal conversation around a variety of unique Evanston History topics. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch; coffee and tea will be provided. November’s topic is: The Midnight Ride of William Dawes William Dawes, the great-great-grandfather of Charles Gates Dawes, role alongside Paul Revere to alert the colonial militias of advancing British troops in the famous ride of 1775. While Revere is remembered, largely due to Paul Revere’s Ride by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, this talk will explore the story of the other rider, Dawes, in the early stages of the Revolutionary War. This Veteran’s Day talk will also acknowledge Civil War veterans in Dawes family, and some of the World War I vets from Evanston. We will also look at the historic 18th century items recently donated to the History Center by William Dawes’ descendants. With Evanston History Center docent Kathy Alonso.
