Farnsworth Concert Series: Philip Lima

@ Join the classical song team of baritone Philip Lima and pianist Tudor Bota as they mark the 200th anniversary of Franz Schubert’s masterpiece, Winterreise (Winter Journey). Widely considered the pinnacle of Romantic-era songwriting, Schubert himself described Winterreise as ‘a cycle of eerie, awe-inspiring songs’ that moved him more than any of his 600 previous vocal works (including his perennial favorite, ‘Ave Maria’). Composed by Schubert in the last year of his short life, Winterreise transcends its narrative of a rejected lover’s snow-bound wanderings with music that explores a “winter of the soul” with icy intensity, touching intimacy, and haunting beauty. The performance features the musical and emotional highlights of Winterreise in the original German with English commentary to guide you through this cathartic, timeless masterpiece. Joint Bio Baritone Philip Lima and pianist Tudor Bota regularly weave their talents together to create a musical whole greater and more beautiful than they could achieve individually. Elements of their frequent Boston-area performances are captured in their cd release Songs of a Wayfarer (available on major platforms). Philip Lima, Baritone A “vibrant baritone and a commanding presence” is how concertgoers and critics describe Philip Lima. He has sung leading operatic roles in Germany and for regional American opera companies in repertoire ranging from traditional favorites to important works by modern composers, including new operas incorporating jazz and rock music. He has appeared as a concert soloist with the Boston Symphony, numerous times with the Boston Pops, and with numerous leading ensembles across the United States and in Italy, Korea, and Ukraine in classic choral masterpieces and important modern works. A winner of the American Prize as a featured soloist on a recording of music by pioneering African American composer Florence Price, Philip is a native of New Bedford, MA, who began his professional musical life as a freelance violist (thanks to public school music training!). He trained vocally at Tanglewood, Boston University, and with Richard Conrad, who is remembered for his pioneering 1960s bel canto collaborations with the immortal Joan Sutherland. Philip currently serves as the assistant chair of the Voice Department at Berklee College of Music. Tudor Bota, Piano Pianist Tudor Bota gave his first solo recital at the age of six in his hometown of Cluj, Romania, and made his first appearance as orchestral soloist with the Cluj Symphony Orchestra. He is a prize winner at important international competitions, including the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition in Budapest, the International Piano Competition “Città di Catanzaro” in Italy, the Competition Eduard Flipse in Rotterdam. Tudor received advanced training at Boston’s leading music schools. He received his Master’s Degree in Piano Performance from Boston University, studying with Anthony di Bonaventura, where, on a full scholarship, he was awarded a teaching assistantship. He later received his Artist Diploma in Piano Performance from Boston Conservatory under a full scholarship, studying with Michael Lewin. He also enrolled in the prestigious Artist Diploma Program in Piano Performance at New England Conservatory, studying with the late Gabriel Chodos, where he also received a teaching assistantship. Over five years starting in 2010 Tudor was the Artistic Director of the Stoneham (MA) Chamber Music Festival performing with the Primavera Trio that he formed in 2012.
