Join curator at the Farnsworth Art Museum, Jane Bianco, for a guided walk through the galleries to view the exhibition MAINE: A Force Within American Art (1890–2026). This walk focuses primarily on the Tanager Gallery. In 1952, at the height of New York’s postwar artistic rise, a group of young painters established Tanager, one of the city’s first artist-run cooperative galleries on East 10th Street. Lois Dodd (born 1927) was among the five founding members. Dodd and many of the other young artists who showed at the gallery also cultivated close ties to Maine, moving fluidly between the energy of downtown New York and the quiet observational possibilities of the coast. Take a look back at earlier times in New York and Maine through the work of Dodd and her artist friends, Alex Katz (born 1927), Anne Arnold (1925-2014), Red Grooms (born 1937), and others who were shaped by these overlapping communities. A gallery tour will be led by curator Jane Bianco, who has organized exhibitions on 19th-21st century painting, photography, drawings and prints, sculpture, textiles, and architecture during her 17-year tenure at the museum. The walk will last approximately 30 minutes, after which guests will have the opportunity to explore the remaining galleries independently. Cost: $12; $10 for members. Includes museum admission.
