This talk features a conversation between William L. Coleman, PhD, Wyeth Foundation Curator and Director, Andrew & Betsy Wyeth Study Center; Francesca Soriano, PhD, Curator of American Art at the Farnsworth Art Museum; and Kendall DeBoer, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Colby College Museum of Art, on the exhibition By Design: The Worlds of Betsy James Wyeth. Reflecting on their collaborative curatorial work, the speakers will discuss how Betsy Wyeth’s environments were researched, interpreted, and shaped into a multi-sited exhibition. The talk will offer insight into her creative legacy and the process of bringing these worlds into public view. Cost: $25; $20 for Farnsworth members About the Curators William L. Coleman, Ph.D. is Director of the Wyeth Study Center and Wyeth Foundation Curator, dividing responsibilities between the Farnsworth and the Brandywine Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, PA. He writes and teaches on the art of the United States, with a particular research focus on the history of landscape painting. Coleman was previously Director of Collections & Exhibitions at The Olana Partnership, Associate Curator of American Art at the Newark Museum of Art, and held long-term fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Smithsonian Institution. He is the author of Andrew Wyeth: The Masterworks, coming in late 2026, and editor of Rockwell Kent: The Work of Art, coming in spring 2027, both from Rizzoli Electa. Francesca Soriano, Ph.D., is the Curator of American Art at the Farnsworth Art Museum. She holds a PhD from Boston University in the History of Art and Architecture with a specialization in 19th and 20th century American art. Francesca has held positions at the Colby College Museum of Art, where she did her undergraduate degree, the Dallas Museum of Art, Di Donna Galleries in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA, as well as a research fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Kendall DeBoer is the Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine, and a PhD Candidate in Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester. She specializes in 20th- and 21st-century art made from unconventional materials, such as cellophane, tinsel, glitter, aluminum foil, balloons, garlands, and hair.
