Substance and Sustenance: Food as Art at foaSOUTH

Substance and Sustenance investigates the myriad roles of food in arts and culture. Food, as a foundational resource and tool for sustained life, has maintained a close connection with the arts since the first civilizations, with cave paintings using vegetable juices as a medium and illustrating hunts as subjects. Appearing as a symbolic centerpiece for still lives in the Dutch Golden Age, food has come to represent wealth, the passage of time, and global relations. Above all else, food has developed its own culture outside the art world, becoming a universal symbol for abundance and community. Families gather around indulgent holiday spreads; lifelong friends catch up at cafes every week; co-workers huddle over doughnuts in a break room; a couple meets for a first date at a local restaurant; parents come home with too many groceries from their bi-weekly CostCo run; students overrun In-N-Outs at midnight after late-night study sessions. In both the everyday and in art, food is our lifeblood, and it is through the mutual appreciation of food that we find connection and community. The public is invited to a special artist reception on Thursday, November 5, 2026, as part of First Thursdays Art Walk. Attendees can meet the artists, explore the exhibition, and enjoy an evening celebrating creativity and community. The foaSOUTH gallery is part of the Festival’s commitment to providing year-round art experiences for the public. As a nonprofit organization, the Festival of Arts supports the arts in and about Laguna Beach through exhibitions, scholarships, and educational programs.
