Learn how John Howard and Harris Whittemore shaped the Naugatuck Valley through civic beautification, early forest restoration, and land conservation—including the 200,000 trees Harris is said to have planted in 1921 on land that is now part of Flanders’ Whittemore Preserve. Ann Y. Smith, former director of the Mattatuck Museum and author of Hidden in Plain Sight: The Whittemore Collection and the French Impressionists, will explore their impact on local history, landscape, and art. Our Land Management Committee will also highlight tree stands that may be approaching their 100‑year anniversary. Ideal for those interested in CT history, art history, and conservation.

Keep exploring
