Advanced Chilkat Weaving Cohort with Ursala Hudson [Partnership with UAS]

Led by Tlingit weaver Kadusné Ursala Hudson, this advanced apprenticeship emphasizes technical excellence, thoughtful design, and the cultivation of a supportive community of advanced weavers committed to strengthening the future of Chilkat weaving in service of cultural sovereignty. Designed for experienced Chilkat and Ravenstail weavers, the apprenticeship integrates technical weaving instruction with design development, historical and contemporary study, critical discussion, and sustained studio practice. Participants will deepen their understanding of the cultural, artistic, technical, and communal responsibilities of weaving while developing greater independence as artists and makers. Each apprentice will design and weave an original large Chilkat bag or small dance apron from conception to completion. The project will provide a shared framework through which apprentices can develop individual artistic vision while strengthening their technical skills and understanding of Chilkat design. The cohort functions as a community of practice. Through peer mentorship, discussion, critique, regular weaving practice, and shared study, participants will contribute to a supportive regional weaving community while preparing themselves to become future teachers, mentors, and culture bearers.
