From Supervisor to Ground Control Rethinking Parenting: Building Independence While Staying Connected The years between 16 and 26 represent a critical period as our children move toward independence. For parents, knowing when to step in and when to step back isn’t always easy. And in a world changing faster than ever, the approaches that worked for us may not always work for them. In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore how parents can shift from supervising their children’s lives to becoming their “Ground Control”—remaining connected and supportive while helping young adults develop the judgment, confidence, resilience, and independence they’ll need to navigate life on their own. Through discussion, real-world scenarios, and practical exercises, participants will leave with a fresh perspective and practical tools they can use immediately. Dr. Matt Kiesling is the founder of Art of Decision, a Lake Forest-based practice helping people navigate life’s challenges, transitions, and important decisions. With more than 30 years of experience leading organizations, coaching individuals, and studying human behavior, Matt brings a unique blend of practical experience and applied psychology to his work. He holds a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) and an MBA, but some of his most valuable lessons have come from being a husband and father of two daughters. His approach is thoughtful, practical, and grounded in the belief that understanding ourselves is the first step toward helping others grow.
