Art Classes

Start from the foundation as Adam demonstrates each step of the process of making an acrylic painting, from gessoing a board/canvas, to creating a drawing and painting, to varnishing and wiring the finished piece. Adam will demonstrate color mixing using a variety of color theory techniques as well as glazing and impasto techniques with a palette knife, brush, and scraping tools. Students will create a series of paintings using their own reference material and learn to keep proportions accurate. This workshop is open to ages 15+ Students Are Asked To Bring the Following Materials Colored pencils  Paper for sketching (standard printer paper or better) At least three gessoed/primed canvases or boards.  Any size will work, but the larger the better (16″ x 20” or 18″ x 24″ is a good ballpark). Brushes/palette knife. A selection of at least 4 sizes of “flat bright” brushes from 1/4 to 1-inch wide  One small round, pointy brush for details Acrylic Paint: primary (3 oz. minimum red, yellow, blue) and secondary (3 oz. minimum green, orange, purple), black (3 oz. minimum) and white (5 oz. minimum)  Palette (plastic plate or similar)  Glass mason jar (or similar) for water  The Art Colony has yogurt containers Paper towels  Reference material: at least four printed photos to use as reference for your personal painting. Please do not rely on your phone for reference images. Make copies to bring to class. Student Supply Fee Covers Once gessoed, cradled wooden panel roughly 14 x 18-inch Adam provides one cradled panel that he has constructed with the correct aspect ratio to fit the first reference image used in class. This teaches students to match the reference material dimensions with the dimensions of the canvas.
